BlueOrchard Finance Ltd (“BlueOrchard”), a global impact investment manager and member of the Schroders Group, is pleased to announce that Calvert Impact Capital, a subsidiary of US-based impact investing firm Calvert Impact, has made a USD 10 million investment in the BlueOrchard managed microfinance strategy in the Latin America and the Caribbean region, focusing on gender, diversity, and inclusion (“LAC GDI initiative”).
This investment supports BlueOrchard’s endeavours to advance financial inclusion for underserved groups in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), including women, indigenous peoples, Afro-descendants, migrants, and other marginalised communities, with the goal of fostering more inclusive growth across the region. BlueOrchard’s LAC GDI initiative provides growth capital and debt investments to financial institutions with a GDI focus, targeting market-rate returns.
With its blended finance structure—supported by Global Affairs Canada and IDB Invest—the initiative leverages de-risking mechanisms such as subordinated capital, first-loss protection, and technical assistance to minimise risks for private investors and mobilise capital at scale.
Building on a long-standing commitment to responsible investing and an established partnership with BlueOrchard, Calvert’s participation brings not only additional capital, but also invaluable expertise in social impact to further strengthen this important initiative.
Jennifer Pryce, CEO of Calvert Impact, noted: “We’re excited to continue our longstanding partnership with BlueOrchard and support this innovative fund. LAC GDI Initiative represents the exact type of strategy that Calvert Impact is passionate about – one that not only delivers immediate impact to clients on the ground but focuses on creating infrastructure that can shape markets and change how, where, and to whom, capital is delivered.”
Michael Wehrle, CEO at BlueOrchard, commented: “We are pleased to welcome Calvert as an investor in our LAC GDI initiative. This partnership underscores our shared commitment to fostering greater equality and empowering underserved groups across Latin America and the Caribbean. Together, we aim to deliver measurable social and economic impact for the communities we serve.”
