This week, we had the pleasure of speaking with Yann Groeger, Regional Director Africa and Latin America in Private Debt. Continue reading if you want to know why Yann joined BlueOrchard, how he ended up being chased by an elephant, and his advice for anyone who is interested in the impact investing industry.

Yann, what do you like most about working at BlueOrchard?

What I like most about BlueOrchard and the industry is that it has allowed me to bring my values into the job. We work on topics that I consider are the biggest global challenges: The fight for more equality, inclusion in all its aspects, and global warming. Working in impact investing gives us the opportunity to actively address these issues.

What is the most memorable experience you have made during your time at BlueOrchard?

We were on a field trip in Tanzania, visiting various investees and micro-borrowers. One day, we met a fantastic teacher who has founded an affordable school together with her husband, as well as a farmer with whom we discussed the issues of climate change. Then, as we were driving through the countryside, our car caught the attention of an enormous elephant…

How do you make an impact in your private life?

I have moved many times in my life, living in Africa, Latin America and Eastern Europe, but I always tried to be part of the local community. I learned that even as a foreigner, I can contribute to political discussions, support local initiatives, and help others to get things done.

Lastly, do you have any advice for people who are interested in impact investing?

We need solutions to the most pressing issues of our times. Impact investing allows us to be part of the solution instead of being only a spectator. It takes a lot of work and dedication – but it’s worth it.

Thank you, Yann.
